When people are in the business of trying to come up with ideas, they become hyper-critical of whatever comes out of their minds and we find that actually prevents some great ideas from coming to the surface. When we see examples in our culture of inventors and decision makers, we focus on the moment of inspiration – the seconds when they get the idea and shout “Eureka!” which leads us to believe that fantastic ideas just come to people like magic.
And while that may be true for some ideas, it isn’t true for all ideas. Believing that this is the normal process by which ideas come to people can actually inhibit the innovation process. Sometimes, the best ideas begin small, humble, and perhaps even a little terrible. You may not have all of the answers, and that’s all right.
Most of the skills we learn and utilise didn’t spring from us overnight. It took time to develop and hone those skills, feedback from others, and continuous practice. Likewise, ideas aren’t things that have to come from us overnight. Sometimes, they are more like skills in that you have to build them up from beginnings that may seem impossible. And as the comic illustrates, even some of the best finished ideas can have unfavourable aspects.
This is one of the reasons we developed our review boards and our custom workflow features. First, we understand that our customers can approve some ideas instantly, but others may need a panel of experts to look at them. Even then, however, the idea may need more work, which is where custom workflow comes in. Rather than giving an idea one specific path it must follow, we allow our users to decide the path an individual idea can take, and use that path again on multiple ideas. This means that once you have reviewed an idea, you can send it back into development where your users can build on it further to create the ideal solution for your business.
Building ideas can take time and we always encourage our clients to not discount small ideas that don’t seem to work right away. Giving it the time and the journey to grow might be exactly what the idea needs to become a winner.
