Innovating Solutions for Infectious Diseases with Wazoku’s Open Innovation Platform

Infectious diseases continue to pose some of the most critical challenges in global health, from preventing the spread of COVID-19 to making life-saving vaccines more affordable in low-income regions. At Wazoku, we harness the power of global collaboration through our Open Innovation Platform to tackle these pressing issues. By connecting organizations with experts and innovators worldwide, we’ve helped generate groundbreaking solutions for biocontainment, Hepatitis C treatment, and polio vaccination affordability.

On this page, you’ll discover how Wazoku Crowd has contributed to solving the world’s most urgent infectious disease challenges. Whether it’s reducing the transmission of COVID-19, developing new biocontainment methods, or increasing access to vital vaccines, Wazoku’s open innovation platform is driving real impact in the fight against infectious diseases.

Diminishing the Transmission of COVID-19: Innovative Practices

While social distancing and hand washing have been widely promoted as key strategies for preventing the spread of COVID-19, this challenge, launched through Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform, sought innovative practices beyond these common measures. The goal was to identify unique behaviors, techniques, or methods that could further reduce transmission and be shared with global health organizations like the WHO, NIH, and CDC for potential implementation.

The challenge encouraged solvers to share practices they were personally adopting or felt should be more widely communicated. Ideas could range from innovative hygiene techniques to behavioral changes that could be adopted on a larger scale.

How the Wazoku Crowd Solved It: Through global collaboration, solvers proposed creative and unconventional methods to slow the spread of COVID-19, such as innovative ways to sanitize surfaces, air filtration techniques, and contactless interaction solutions. These ideas provided health authorities with new ways to complement existing measures and potentially reduce transmission even further.

This challenge demonstrated the power of open innovation in responding to a global crisis, providing fresh insights into public health strategies.

Infectious Diseases Innovation Challenge: Novel Intrinsic Biocontainment Methods for Viral Pathogen Research

Research on viral pathogens is essential for understanding and preventing future pandemics, but it carries the risk of accidental or intentional release of dangerous pathogens. To mitigate these risks, intrinsic biocontainment methods are needed to ensure that if a pathogen escapes a lab, it will not pose a danger to humans.

This challenge, hosted on Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform, sought novel biocontainment strategies that could modify pathogens or host cells, preventing the pathogens from causing disease if released into the environment. The ideal solution would be inexpensive, easy to implement, and would not interfere with ongoing research.

Key requirements included:

  • Robust to evolutionary pressure: The pathogen should not evolve to bypass the biocontainment method.
  • Non-disruptive to research: The method should maintain the pathogen’s biological function for study.
  • Applicable across viral pathogens: Solutions could target specific viruses or a broad range of human pathogens.

How the Wazoku Crowd Solved It: The Wazoku Crowd proposed innovative biocontainment methods, such as genetic modifications that restrict pathogens to controlled environments and host-pathogen interaction inhibitors that prevent the virus from infecting humans. These solutions offered robust protection while allowing researchers to continue their critical work without compromising safety.

These groundbreaking methods provide a vital layer of security in pathogen research, helping to prevent accidental or intentional outbreaks.

Infectious Diseases Innovation Challenge: Raising the Treatment Rate for Hepatitis C in Europe

Hepatitis C (HCV) is a serious public health issue, affecting around 1% of the population in Europe. Despite being a major risk factor for liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, treatment rates remain shockingly low, with many patients undiagnosed and untreated. Increasing awareness among healthcare professionals, regulators, and the public is crucial to improving diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

To address this, the Seeker launched a challenge through Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform, seeking proposals for strategies that can sustainably raise the treatment rate for HCV in Europe. The challenge focused on enhancing awareness and encouraging diagnosis among key stakeholders, including healthcare providers and patients.

Key focus areas included:

  • Increasing diagnosis rates: Identifying undiagnosed patients and referring them to specialists.
  • Improving treatment rates: Motivating diagnosed patients to seek and adhere to treatment.
  • Raising public and professional awareness: Educating both the general public and healthcare providers about the risks of HCV and the benefits of timely diagnosis and treatment.

How the Wazoku Crowd Solved It: Through Wazoku’s platform, solvers developed comprehensive awareness campaigns targeting healthcare providers and patients, action plans for government engagement, and stakeholder management strategies to increase HCV diagnosis and treatment rates. Proposed solutions also included practical methods for measuring success and achieving long-term impact across Europe.

These solutions provided a roadmap for improving HCV treatment rates, offering actionable steps to combat one of Europe’s most pressing public health challenges.

Increasing the Affordability of Inactivated Poliovirus Vaccine (IPV) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Polio eradication efforts have made tremendous progress, but ensuring the affordability of the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) in low- and middle-income countries remains a significant challenge. While the live oral polio vaccine (OPV) is inexpensive, its weakened viruses can revert to a virulent form. As a result, IPV, which contains killed viruses and cannot cause paralysis, will become the vaccine of choice once OPV is discontinued. However, IPV’s higher cost and administration requirements pose a barrier to its widespread use in lower-income regions.

This challenge, hosted on Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform, in partnership, aimed to find innovative strategies for reducing the cost of IPV. Solvers were encouraged to propose novel, unexplored approaches that could significantly lower the price of the vaccine and make it more accessible.

Areas of interest included:

  • Reducing vaccine doses: Identifying methods to reduce the total amount of inactivated poliovirus antigen while preserving immunity.
  • Cost-efficient vaccine manufacturing: Exploring ways to cut production costs and simplify biosafety containment.
  • Innovative delivery methods: Developing new ways to administer smaller doses, such as intradermal delivery.

How the Wazoku Crowd Solved It: Wazoku solvers proposed a wide range of cost-saving measures, including the use of adjuvants to enhance vaccine potency, reduced dosing strategies, and improved intradermal delivery devices. These ideas highlighted new paths for reducing IPV costs in a sustainable manner, helping to make the vaccine more affordable and accessible in low- and middle-income countries.

These solutions are expected to contribute significantly to the global effort to eradicate polio, while ensuring that low-cost vaccination remains viable post-eradication.
