Pioneering Endocrinology Innovations with Wazoku’s Open Innovation Platform

The field of endocrinology presents a wide array of challenges, from monitoring metabolic processes in real time to discovering novel clinical applications for receptor modulators. At Wazoku, we empower organizations to solve these complex problems through our Open Innovation Platform, bringing together a global network of experts and innovators. By leveraging this collaborative approach, we’ve helped organizations explore new frontiers in endocrinology, from prostate cancer research to serotonin receptor modulation.

On this page, you’ll discover how Wazoku Crowd has delivered innovative solutions for cutting-edge endocrinology challenges. Whether it’s real-time monitoring of steroid metabolites, identifying new clinical uses for NK3 antagonists, or sourcing novel serotonin receptor modulators, Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform is transforming how problems in endocrinology are solved.

Real-Time Monitoring of Steroid Metabolites and Metabolic Flux in Prostate Cancer Cells

Prostate cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men, often becomes resistant to standard androgen deprivation therapy. Cancer cells eventually synthesize their own androgens, such as dihydrotestosterone (DHT), through multiple metabolic pathways, complicating treatment. To better understand these processes and develop new treatments, the Seeker sought solutions for real-time, single-cell monitoring of steroid metabolites and metabolic flux in prostate cancer cells.

This challenge aimed to develop a method that could:

  • Distinguish between similar steroid molecules in the androgen synthesis pathways, such as DHEA, testosterone, and DHT.
  • Monitor these molecules in real-time at the single-cell level, offering high specificity and temporal resolution.
  • Provide insights into the dynamics of metabolic flux, potentially revealing whether the process occurs at a constant rate or fluctuates over time.

How the Wazoku Crowd Solved It: Through Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform, solvers proposed innovative techniques like engineered fluorescent proteins for real-time, high-specificity detection of steroid metabolites. Solutions explored using FRET-based sensors and other cutting-edge technologies to monitor these metabolic pathways at the single-cell level, enabling greater insights into the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer.

These solutions provided the Seeker with promising approaches for tracking metabolic activity in prostate cancer cells, laying the groundwork for potential future collaborations.

Endocrinology Innovation Challenge: Exploring New Clinical Indications for NK3 (Tachykinin Receptor 3) Antagonists

NK3 antagonists, small molecule inhibitors of the neurokinin receptor 3, have shown promise in treating CNS conditions like schizophrenia and drug addiction. However, recent findings suggest these antagonists also lower sex hormone levels, leading the Seeker to explore new potential clinical applications where this side effect could be beneficial.

The goal of this challenge was to identify novel therapeutic uses for NK3 antagonists that could leverage the hormone-lowering effects, either within or outside the central nervous system (CNS). The Seeker sought clinical indications or patient populations where the lowering of testosterone and estrogen could be therapeutically valuable.

How the Wazoku Crowd Solved It: Through Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform, solvers proposed innovative applications where the hormone-lowering effects of NK3 antagonists could be beneficial. The solutions ranged from targeting endocrine disorders to metabolic conditions, providing new avenues for clinical development beyond traditional CNS applications.

These proposals provided the Seeker with novel, evidence-based clinical indications, offering new potential uses for NK3 antagonists that could maximize both their primary effects and their associated hormonal impact.

Endocrinology Innovation Challenge: Seeking Modulators of Serotonin Receptor 5-HT2a (HTR2A) and/or 5-HT2c (HTR2C)

Modulation of serotonin receptors 5-HT2a (HTR2A) and 5-HT2c (HTR2C) held significant potential for treating various neurological and psychiatric disorders. In this challenge, the Seeker sought suppliers of compounds that could act as modulators—such as agonists, antagonists, or inhibitors—of these receptors. Participants were expected to submit lists of compounds that met specified requirements, with the opportunity to supply material samples for further testing.

The goal was to identify diverse and novel compounds that could modulate these serotonin receptors, focusing on creating non-commercially available molecules that showed evidence of receptor activity. The Seeker provided an initial transfer fee for selected compounds, with the potential for further collaboration if the compounds showed promise.

How the Wazoku Crowd Solved It: Through Wazoku’s Open Innovation platform, solvers proposed structurally diverse and novel compounds that target 5-HT2a and 5-HT2c receptors. Solutions included well-documented evidence of activity from in vivo, in vitro, and molecular modeling studies, ensuring the proposed compounds met the Seeker’s high standards for specificity and functionality.

These submissions offered the Seeker a range of promising compounds for further testing and development, moving closer to potential treatments for disorders involving serotonin receptor modulation.
