A Global Engineering Leader’s Commitment to a Sustainable Future through Innovation

Sandvik, a global engineering and materials technology leader, has always been at the forefront of innovation and sustainability. Recognizing the urgent need for a sustainable future, Sandvik has set ambitious 2030 Sustainability Goals in four key areas: Climate, Circularity, People, and Fair Play.

Partnering with Wazoku to Drive Innovation

To achieve these ambitious goals, Sandvik has partnered with Wazoku, a leading idea management software provider. Together, they have set up a global Ideas Hub with the aim of gathering 100,000 ideas or innovations by 2030. These ideas will drive Sandvik’s sustainability plans and help the company reach its targets.

Harnessing the Power of Collective Intelligence

The Ideas Hub, accessible via a smartphone app or the intranet, is designed to be as intuitive as a social media platform. It allows colleagues to give a thumbs up, make comments, develop an idea, or even generate spin-offs to new ones. The platform has been used to run open innovation Challenges, discuss ongoing initiatives, and take R&D designs to the next step before deployment.

Encouraging Employee Engagement

Sandvik has successfully engaged its employees in the innovation process. The company awards prizes to employees to stimulate and reward significant efforts in industrial innovation. The Ideas Hub has seen huge engagement from Sandvik staff, with nearly 2000 activated users on the platform.

“Sustainability is everyone’s problem but also everyone’s opportunity. Better business through sustainability means you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank and be able to look yourself in the mirror and be proud.”

Strategic Targets for a Sustainable Future

In addition to its 2030 goals, Sandvik has defined targets for 2025 in six strategic areas, including sustainability, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency. These targets underline Sandvik’s commitment to creating a sustainable future and improving its business operations.

Implementing Sustainable Ideas

Some of the ideas generated on the Ideas Hub have already been implemented. For instance, an idea on how to extract tungsten drill bits for recycling has been fully commercialized. Sandvik sells tools to partner companies, buys back these tools at their end-of-life stage, and then recycles the tungsten content to create more tools. This circular approach is more sustainable and better for business.

Sustainability at the Core of Business

For Sandvik, sustainability is not just a goal, but a core principle of how it does business. The company believes that better business through sustainability is an opportunity for everyone. With Wazoku’s help, Sandvik is harnessing the power of collective intelligence to drive its sustainability initiatives and create a better future for all.
