Designing a Sustainable Cleaning Solution for Photovoltaic Installations

  • Award: $25000 USD
  • Challenge closed

Challenge overview

ABSTRACT

Solar photovoltaics (PV) is a renewable energy based technology which converts light energy from the sun into electrical energy. In order to ensure reliable operation and extended lifetime, it is necessary to ensure that PV module surfaces remain clean and free from dirt accumulation. Hence, the Seeker is interested in obtaining innovative solutions for cleaning large scale PV installations.

This Theoretical Challenge requires only a written proposal.

OVERVIEW

Soiling refers to the accumulation of dirt, dust and other debris on the surface of PV modules. These particles result in the scattering of incident light and shading leading to a decrease in overall power output. Hence, the rate and quantity of soiling will directly determine if the system will function at its optimal efficiency. The impact of soiling is significantly high for PV systems situated in desert conditions. Additionally, factors such as topography, humidity, and wind speed result in accelerated soiling rates. Therefore, the Seeker is searching for effective solutions to mitigate the impact of soiling for PV installations located in desert conditions.

This is a Theoretical Challenge that requires only a written proposal to be submitted. The Challenge award will be contingent upon theoretical evaluation of the proposal by the Seeker.

To receive an award, the Solvers will have to transfer their exclusive intellectual property (IP) rights to the Seeker.

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by 11:59 PM (US Eastern Time) on January 3, 2022.

Late submissions will not be considered.

ABOUT THE SEEKER

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) is the exclusive provider of electricity and water services in Dubai. DEWA was formed in 1992 following the merger of the Dubai Electricity Company and the Dubai Water Department which had been operational independently since 1959. DEWA is responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity and water across the emirate of Dubai. For more information, please visit https://dewa.gov.ae/en.

What is InnoCentive?

What is an InnoCentive Theoretical IP Transfer Challenge?

An InnoCentive Theoretical Challenge builds upon an idea but is not yet a proof of concept. A solution to a Theoretical Challenge will solidify the Solver's concept with detailed descriptions, specifications and requirements necessary to bringing a good idea closer to becoming an actual product or service.

This Challenge is a Theoretical IP Transfer Challenge, meaning that Solvers must transfer all rights to the Intellectual Property (IP) for which they are awarded. Solvers that do not win retain the rights to their solution after the evaluation period is complete. The Seeker retains no rights to any IP not awarded.
